Made it back safely from Europe! After over 24 hours of straight travel, all of us were excited to be back in Providence. With tour behind us, we’re getting amped up to kick off our 7s season with the Sorenson Cup on April 9. Practice starts up straightaway on Monday, and we’ll be back in action after a much needed Sunday rest (and study…). Check up here for our weekly postings about current events, and stay tuned for info from the games!
Brown Women’s Rugby is in the midst of its second year as an NCAA varsity team, starting the spring sevens season after a strong fifteens season. We are currently led by Head Coach Kathy Flores, Assistant Coaches Kerri Heffernan and Michele Armstrong, and captains Oksana Goretaya and Tiara Mack. We finished the fall with a 6-4 record (4-1 in the Ivy League), placing second in the Ivy League Championships and competing in and hosting the National Collegiate Women’s Varsity Rugby Association (NCWVRA) Championship.
Looking forward, the spring will be both challenging and exciting. It kicks off with a European tour the week of Spring Break, with matches lined up against the Swiss and Czech National Teams. Afterwards, we will host a sevens tournament and attend tournaments at Princeton and Army. In preparation for this, we’ve spent the winter training, continuing with skills sessions and running workouts.
Off the field, we have been busy with fundraising efforts and recruitment. The underclassmen look to step up as a large senior class graduates, and many of us have been heavily involved in planning fundraising ventures such as “Pies for Tries”, chocolate sales, scratch cards, and a Tour Book.
